Project Overview

AEROS is a pediatric respiratory monitoring system developed to improve how asthma-related respiratory risks are detected and communicated.

Asthma management is often reactive. In many cases, parents or caregivers only become aware of a problem after a child begins experiencing noticeable breathing difficulty. AEROS was developed around a different idea: what if a child's environment, respiratory activity, and vital signs could be monitored continuously to provide earlier warning of potentially unsafe conditions?

The system combines a smart wearable device, an inhaler-attached sensing system, and a mobile application into one connected platform.

Rather than functioning as another standalone sensor, AEROS was designed as an integrated monitoring ecosystem capable of collecting environmental and physiological information, processing it through embedded hardware, and presenting useful information to caregivers.

The Problem

Asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory conditions affecting children. A major challenge with its management is that intervention often occurs only after symptoms have already become noticeable.

Children may also be exposed to particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and other environmental conditions that can negatively affect respiratory comfort without the caregiver immediately knowing.

For young children, this challenge becomes even greater. They may not understand sensor readings, medical terminology or even how to properly communicate changes in how they are feeling.

This created the central engineering question behind AEROS:

Can we build a wearable and connected sensing system that continuously observes a child's respiratory environment and physiological condition while remaining simple enough for everyday use?

The objective therefore became to create a system that could monitor relevant conditions, detect potentially concerning changes and communicate those changes to a parent or caregiver in a simple and actionable form.
